I’m just helping you find that new favorite book of yours. Your favorite couples? They probably got a trope too! It’s always so nice to realize or find out your favorite romance trope and keep searching for books with the same theme. TV shows, movies, comics, games, anime’, & books are full of tropes & many rabid fan-sites now name & track said tropes with a self-explanatory title for each one.” We can name a few: accidental pregnancy, best friends to lovers, sibling’s best friend, marriage of convenience, and so many more. It can also be described as another variation on the same theme. What is a trope? Urban Dictionary explains it best: “Despite the erroneous definitions already published here, trope on the interwebs really refers to an often overused plot device. Trope Tuesday is a weekly column where I share books that I know people will enjoy with a specific central trope. I adore them and I always tend to find my favorite ones in romance books so I can enjoy them even more. Romantic tropes are everywhere, and they are fabulous. You can also see them in shows, movies, plays, etc. In every romance book you read there are tropes or archetypes you find inside its pages. To explain a little about what this post will be about, every Trope Tuesday post starts with the same introduction. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Texas Destiny by Lorraine Heath![]() The brother of the man the heroine's supposed to marry picks her up and is supposed to bring her on the month-long journey to the ranch. So this one has a mail-order bride set-up in the American West. But I saw it when I was skimming through my Kindle titles, seeing what I was in the mood for, and I thought, "Oh, well, I'll read a few pages and see if it captures me." You know how this goes, I didn't stop and finished the book in about two days, lol. ![]() I believe someone recommended it to me but my memory fails me. ![]() I'm not sure what originally made me download Texas Destiny by Lorraine Heath. So I decided to give one a try, and I'm so glad I did. And one thing I couldn't ever remember reading was a historical western romance. I've mentioned before that I didn't grow up reading romance, so I'm playing catch up with some of the oldies but goodies. This Friday I have a bit of a throwback book for you. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Dead witch walking book![]() ![]() The Hollows series (also called the Rachel Morgan series) is a series of 16 urban fantasy novels, eight short stories, two graphic novels, and one compendium resource by Kim Harrison, published by HarperCollins Publishers, in an alternate history universe and set primarily in the city of Cincinnati and its suburbs. She was in a graduate-level creative writing class when she got an assignment to write fifty pages of something publishable. ![]() She has an amusing story about her first writing effort. The family lives in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, where Karen’s best friend is the same one she’s had since childhood. She never hesitates to talk about her three boys and her love for her husband. One of the aspects of Karen’s biography that I love is she puts her family first. I bought her book at the conference, and I’ve been reading her wonderful stories ever since. We had a delightful conversation in a deserted meeting room, and I’m sure Karen has no idea who I am, but I remember her vividly. I met Karen Robards at a Romantic Times conference in 1983. ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments Spill simmer falter wither![]() ![]() His unwillingness to reflect back on the past is due to his steadfast choice to remain consciously ignorant about his own family life. Ray’s persistent focus on the present leads to frequent emotionally-charged dreams which he describes in detail. The story builds to a sensitive depiction of a deeply lonely existence. When bits of the past come to the forefront they do so with shocking emotional force since the rest of the narrative is so sedate. While learning to care and communicate with his dog, Ray reflects on life and the detritus surrounding him in his dilapidated home. It’s not often I’ll enjoy reading a book that withholds so much about its central character – for instance, I had issues with Rachel Cusk’s much-praised novel “Outline.” For the majority of “Spill Simmer Falter Wither” we know little about Ray’s past or circumstances. He finds it easer to speak to his pet over people because “there’s no need for the weighing and measuring of words, no need to listen to the way they stand in the air after my voice has finished.” This sounds like it might become an achingly sentimental tale, but it turns into a deeply sobering, atmospheric, pain-ridden journey about Ray and his canine companion. ![]() The narrative is entirely composed of Ray speaking directly to this dog. When middle aged loner Ray comes across a notice for a dog up for adoption he impulsively acquires this one-eyed pet who quickly becomes his closest companion. ![]() 5/20/2023 0 Comments A moveable feast hemingway![]() The book is referenced in numerous contemporary films, such as Midnight in Paris and City of Angels. The memoir blends fact with fiction as Hemingway recalls his early time spent in Paris as an up-and-coming writer during the 1920s. The memoir’s structure mirrors this concept, featuring 20 separate yet related stories that make up Hemingway’s own collection of inconsistent holy days. The title, A Moveable Feast, is a play on the term used for holy days that do not consistently fall on the same date every year. ![]() ![]() A Moveable Feast was written by Ernest Hemingway and published posthumously in 1964, three years after his death. ![]() |
